Sadler's Wells looks forward to welcoming Parisian staff and students!

The London based students will be working in the theatre spaces all day Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Central St Martins have offered to host a visit on Thursday afternoon, for more information either contact Alex or Jenny at St Martins j.hayton@csm.ac.uk you can also contact hansjorg.schmidt@bruford.ac.uk to visit Rose Bruford College.

Whist in London its worth visitng the Soutbank http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/ as it includes performance and exhibition spaces that I think you will find interesting.

Weds, Thursday fit up, rehearsal 10-8 (finish time TBC) Students are welcome at any time but it will be a case of just watching most of the time!

Friday Rehearsal all day, dress at 3 and walk through at 4, show 7 & 8pm, post show reception 8:30-9:30. We will also arrange a cheap dinner on Friday night for everybody.

Rodin seen from the sky

Trip to Paris and then London

Hello English participants!

Have some of you booked for a trip to Paris around the 6th and the 7th of March?
We have organized a visit of Rodin's atelier for you. We'll also gather with French students in Chaillot and then attend the performance in the Musée Rodin.

Students here are also asking about the possibility to host some of you here and then be hosted in London during the festival.

Please tell us more! We're looking forward to meeting you!

Rehearsal in the Musée Rodin last Sunday

Starting with some warming, and then dancing in the exhibition in the middle of visitors. Some of them even started to draw what was happening... A big success!

And then the first "performance for real" last Wednesday went perfectly well. We hope to see you for the second one, on the 7th of March!

Sadler's Wells Group

Hello Everyone! I was asked some time ago to explain to everyone where the London Participants are with creating their Rodin Reflections work here at Sadler's Wells. We're a bit clearer now so I thought I'd explain a little about the concept that we're working on here!

Together we're looking into creating a 'physical gallery', a kind of living gallery space of physical installations that trace the journey of an artwork from the artist's initial creation of a work through to the reactions of the people who observe it.

We're discussing the idea of projecting images or videos that the performers can interact with or react to. Over the next week or so I will be looking back through the Blog at the great work that you have all been creating with a view to perhaps integrating some of these videos or images - if you wouldn't mind!

If any of you who are creating video or photographic work have a specific interest in providing material for us to use, then feel free to leave a comment to this post or contact me at info@timcasson.co.uk

Hi, My name is Heather, sorry i have not blogged sooner. would just like to say that i really enjoyed the introductory workshop and am very much looking forward to the next one on sunday. My mind has been busy thinking of ideas for the project and cannot wait to begin creating some work for the installation, a lot of idea's have been flying around and it will be really good to get something in motion.

through research and exploration I think that this project is going to be a really valuable experience.

Projet MUAMG (evolution dus projet MAM) 

En raison de problèmes techniques l'idée du gonflable est abandonnée et le projet se réduit à une simple projection.
C'est un tryptique ( projection de trois vidéos différentes sur trois panneaux). Notre volonté était de traiter le thème de la staticité et du mouvement à travers les vide et les pleins du corps.
Dans notre vidéo nous utilisons des silhouettes, des ombres, et nous voudrions que les danseurs viennent donner vie à cette vidéo sur scène à la place de ces silhouettes.
Pour cela nous comptons augmenter les plages de vide avec lumières ( voir min 2:13) en fonction de la volonté des danseurs.
Il y aurait donc un rapport direct entre les danseurs et la vidéo.


MUAMG project ( evolution of the MAM project) 

At the begining we were supposed to have an installation with our video but we won't at the end due to technical problems.
So it is going to be a projection of three different videos ( the three you see in the video below) on three boards at the same time.
This video is about staticity and mouvement through filled and empty sapces of the body.
As the video is composed of silhouets, the dancers would bring on scene this video to life instead of these silhouets.
To achieve this we can increase the parts of the video where there are no silhouets ( seeex. Min 2:13 on video).

Un grand merci pour tous les travaux qui nous ont été remis. Nous avons apprécié la qualité de toutes les propositions et avons vu votre grande implication dans leur réalisation. Les critères de sélection répondent essentiellement à notre ligne de programmation artistique. Nous avons aussi cherché le lien avec tout ce qui vous a été proposé dans le cadre de ce projet: la connaissance du travail de Rodin, la découverte de Russell Maliphant, les ateliers de danse avec Wu. Il y a eu aussi la prise en compte de l’état d’avancement du travail. Mais surtout ne croyez pas que si vous n'avez pas été sélectionnés, c'est que vous avez fait est mauvais! Et je vous rappelle que cette exposition n'influence pas du tout le travail qui se fait à Londres. Sachez également qu'un DVD de toutes vos vidéos et photos sera offert à Russell Maliphant, Didier Deschamps et Alistair Spalding.

L'exposition débutera mardi prochain. Nous ferons le montage lundi avec certains d'entre vous. Comme vous le savez, notre réunion de lundi soir a dû être annulée car nous avions beaucoup trop d'activités à gérer à la fois, mais ce n'est que partie remise. Ce serait bien de faire une grande projection de tous vos travaux quand les Anglais seront là début mars (pour visiter l’atelier de Rodin à Meudon et assister à la nocturne au Musée Rodin). Ce sera aussi l’occasion de parler en direct de ce qui est prévu pour le festival Connect les 16 et 17 mars. Qu'en pensez-vous?

En attendant, bon courage à ceux qui travaillent sur le montage des DVD, et rendez-vous le 9 février pour voir cette exposition et le spectacle. Si vous voulez passer avant pour voir seulement l'exposition, vous êtes les bienvenus. Le théâtre ouvre 1h30 avant chaque représentation (vérifiez bien les dates de relâche, le week-end du 4 par exemple...).

We've made a selection of some videos and images made here in Paris for an exhibition starting next Tuesday at Chaillot. Thank you for these very interesting works and for your involvement in the project!

And the day of RM Company’s performance is also coming! The English will see it first, on the 5th I think. Am I right? The French will see it on the 9th.

Then we hope to see you all around the 7th of March for the performance at the Musée Rodin with the dancer Wu Zheng who directed the workshops here and some of the students. A visit at Rodin’s Atelier in Meudon is also planned for the English who will be here. Maybe we should also organize a gathering in Chaillot: the English could have a tour and then we could watch all the videos together and talk about Connect festival in London. What do you think?

Voici notre proposition vidéo que nous voyons comme un "module" que nous pourrions passer en boucle, mais en une boucle variable (à l'envers, en accélérer, au ralentit, etc.). Nous avons voulu traiter du mouvement et du statuaire, les confronter, réussir à percevoir le mouvement dans une statut (ce que nous évoque particulièrement les statuts de Rodin.), différents rythmes dans le mouvement, en bref un vaste sujet qui nous concerne tous, architectes, sculpteurs danseurs, musiciens, etc. et en tout temps. C'est d'ailleurs avec les chronophotoraphies de muybridge que nous avons travaillé.

De l'Homme à la Machine

Le but de ce court film ( 2'30'' ) est de montrer le changement de la société à l'époque de Rodin. On passe en effet du travail à la main au travail à la machine, du sublime à la vitesse et la rentabilité à tout prix. L'homme se transforme en machine. Il doit faire plus, plus vite.

Ce film est inspiré des films expérimentaux de Fernand Léger des années 1920's, films cubistes et étrange montrant une époquer et une façon de voir. Il mêle donc photographie de sculpture de Rodin, des morceaux de films tirés de tout horizons, et de dessins.

Le son de la vidéo est aussi relatif à l'ambiance. L'organe qui représente le mieux le changement de rythme est le coeur. Un son presque neutre, qui est relaxant mais qui peut vite devenir stressant. C'est un peu ce à quoi me fait penser ce changement parfois trop rapide.

Rodin a emprunté à la technologie ( moulage, fonte,... ) mais ne l'a pas surutilisée...

Merci encore pour toutes vos propositions et il serait bien que toutes puissent être visibles sur ce blog afin que les Anglais puissent les voir et s'en inspirer dans leur travail avec Tim. J'en profite pour leur souhaiter une fois de plus la bienvenue.
Je crois que Tim a l'intention d'instaurer une vraie co-creation entre les danseurs anglais et les créateurs français. Mais peut-être qu'il peut mieux nous expliquer quelles sont ses intentions? Il serait bien aussi que nous connaissions le calendrier des répétitions prévues à Londres pour pouvoir organiser les réponses qui seront données à Paris.
A partir de maintenant le blog devient l'outil essentiel de communication pour cette collaboration artistique. A vous de vous en saisir!

I think that Tim intends to make his creation a real collaborative project with the French participants. Tim, could you tell us more about what you think it would look like? What would be the role of the French? Could you or the Sadler's also tell us about your rehearsals' schedule please? It would help the French participants organize their responses to your propositions.
From now on this blog is the most important tool for communication in that artistic collaboration. Please use it!

Notre projet représente la projection d’une sensualité, mimée, expressive
sur un corps vivant, en le mettant dans l’émergence du plaisir physique. Un lien intense et intime se créer entre le deux corps mêlés et superposés.
La muse projetée, avec sa danse sensuelle vient réveiller subtilement certaines parties du corps vivant, pour le plonger dans un désir progressif. La passion qui s’incarne dans ce personnage vivant en mouvement propose des ombres portées évoquant les sculptures de Rodin.

Our project represents the projection of a mimed and expressive sensuality on a living body, by keeping in the emergence of physical pleasure. An intense and intimate link be created between the two bodies mixed and superimposed.
The projected muse, with her sensual dance, is subtly wake parts of the living body, to plunge it into a progressive desire. The passion that is embodied in this living person proposes moving shadows reminiscent of Rodin sculptures.

My name is Tim Casson and I will be working in London with Sadler's Wells as a Dance Artist to lead the workshops around Russell Maliphant's new production and Rodin's work.

Recently I have been taking class with the company and observing some of the creation of the new work. It all looks very exciting and I can't wait to start working with everyone in our sessions and reacting to what looks to be a fantastic show!

Pour Rodin, la matière était le foyer de sa création, c’est à travers elle qu’il donne sa forme et sa force. Notre projet témoigne de l’évolution de cette matière créatrice qui peu à peu révèle le corps sensuel. L’expérimentation du projet met à jour la matière modelée évoluant sur le corps vivant en créant des vibrations lumineuses liées au relief donné.

For Rodin, the material was the center of his creation, it's through it that he gives its shape and its strength. Our project demonstrates the evolution of the creative material that gradually reveals the sensual body. The experimental project will update the modeled material evolving on the living body by creating vibrations of light associated with the relief given.

This is a little introduction to us…
We are see saw performance group. The group is made up for four members; Amelia Prazak, Milda Lembertaite, Hannah Dolan and Michelle Houston through various collaborations whilst studying for our BA; Performance design and Practice at Central St. Martins, London. We all come form very different social and cultural backgrounds, from Switzerland, Lithuania and the North and South of England. We work in a site responsive manor through multi disciplinary forms between experimental theatre, installation, happenings and performance art.
